"Thrilling Match at SAFF Championship: India Emerges Victorious over Lebanon in Penalty Shootout"
India defeated Lebanon 4-2 in a penalty shootout on Saturday to go
to the SAFF Championship final. The match took place at the Shree Kantirava
Stadium.
Up until the end of extra time, the game remained scoreless, forcing
a penalty shootout in which India was perfect. Anwar Ali, Sunil Chhetri, Naorem
Mahesh, and Udanta Singh easily beat Lebanon's custodian by anticipating his
movements.
For the viewers, Captain Hassan Matouk missed the first penalty kick
before Khalil Badr made a save to start the shootout. India will take on Kuwait
in the championship match on Tuesday after Kuwait overcame Bangladesh 1-0 in
overtime.
India made five defensive lineup adjustments that day, one of which
had to be made since Sandesh Jhingan wasn't there. Only Anwar Ali was still
playing after the draw with Kuwait. The reorganised defence was exposed in
accordance with their wishes, particularly in the first 10 minutes.
Before Zein Al Faran wasted a one-on-one opportunity, Nader Matar
had a good chance in the opening minute. Gurpreet Singh Sandhu, India's goalie
of choice over Amrinder Singh, attempted to deflect the play away from the second
post with many long dives, but in vain.
But in the 16th minute, when Chhetri passed to Jackson Singh, the
ball was deflected to Abdul Samad, who was blatantly offside, by Chhetri's
touch. The hosts might have then grabbed the lead.
Nevertheless, that move assisted in relieving Lebanon's initial
pressure, and the game stayed competitively balanced after that. The person in
charge of ending the stalemate, Matouk, did not act on his own initiative until
just before the break. He scored a wonderful free-kick with a few minutes left
before halftime, but Gurpreet was up to the task.
For the majority of the second half, both teams neutralised one
another. With around 15 minutes left, India's acting coach Mahesh Gawli
inserted Akash Mishra and Mahesh to provide some much-needed spark.
The home team put pressure on Lebanon, earning four corners in the
space of five minutes, and the new energy was clear. The contest went into
overtime, nevertheless, thanks to the persistence of Alexander Ilic's team.
Chhetri had the opportunity to win it for India in just a few short
minutes. Mehdi Khalil, the custodian for Lebanon, received an excellent ball
from a distance, but the skipper blew the chance from six yards out. Udanta
made a critical run to set up a scoring opportunity in the second period of
extra time, and Lalrindika Ralte's attempt forced a last-second save. None of
these initiatives ultimately turned out to be expensive.
